What Are Subluxations?

Most people have never heard of the term subluxation, but more and more of our patients are hearing about subluxations and they want to know what it is and how it effects them.

In simplest way to say it, a subluxation is something in your body that is out of place. For chiropractic purposes, this generally refers to your spine, or a Vertebral Subluxation. There has been some controversy about how this term applies to chiropractic, since the late 1800′s, but today it is widely accepted as a misalignment of the spine that causes spinal bones to press against nearby nerve tissue.

The result of a subluxation can be much worse than a headache or back pain, it can actually interfere with your body’s ability to communicate with your brain. A Subluxation can effect your muscles, discs, ligaments and other connective tissues.

Subluxations can be caused by auto accidents, injuries, such as a slip or fall, or other repetitive motions or improper lifting. Other less obvious causes could be mental stress, from anger or fear and even drug abuse, chemical toxins, or a poor diet.

Fortunately, for most of us, our bodies can naturally repair most of the subluxations created by normal everyday life. Natural movement throughout the day, a healthy diet, and some pain medication will work for most of us. But in some circumstances, your body will need help healing, which is when you need to seek help from a chiropractor.
